Good afternoon SMMS Families, We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our District. As you may already be aware, building our social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year. Over the next several weeks, students and teachers will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves. We will be asking for your child to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey they will be completing during homebase next week. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on Sense of Belonging, School Safety, Teacher-Student Relationships and Social Awareness. We are asking that all of our students participate in the surveys, as their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether. The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential. We are partnering with a third-party vendor, Panorama, to support us in administering these surveys. If you have any questions ab the SEL survey, please don’t hesitate to contact me.Have a great weekend! Jim Hendrickson Principal

Picture retake day is scheduled for October 19th. Any parents that are unhappy with their original picture, can take part in retakes.
The retake image will replace the original image. If a package was pre-ordered, that package will need to be returned to the school on retake day.
A new package will be made with the retake image. Parents do not need to place a new order.
Students that missed original day or parents that did not get a chance to preorder, can do so by clicking the button below.
We will use the last image on file. Meaning that if parents are happy with the original, there is no need for a retake.

¡Olé! Hard work pays off for Spanish Students at South Milwaukee Middle School |
|
The opening month of school was extremely positive for students of Grade 7 and Grade 8 at South Milwaukee Middle School.
In Grade 7, the majority of students had never previously had exposure to the Spanish language and were taking their very first steps at the beginning of September.
However, by the end of the month, those students could introduce themselves in the language, say how they feel, tell where they are from and express the days of the week and the date.
The students also began to learn geography as they learned the Spanish-speaking countries and capitals of South America.
In Grade 8, the students, already with a Quarter of experience in Spanish from the previous year, learned how to tell time in the language and how to express the weather on a daily basis.
Students also began to learn the Spanish-speaking countries and capitals of Central America to gain an understanding of the different parts of the world where the Spanish language is spoken. We applaud the efforts of all our Spanish students in both Grade 7 and Grade 8 and we look forward to them continuing their World Language education in our fine high school program!

There is a 'One Chip Challenge' going around on social media and it has started to show up in our schools. The One Chip Challenge is a social media challenge that involves consumption of a spicy tortilla chip.
The chip contains capsaicin, a compound found naturally in chili peppers. Capsaicin consumption typically causes mouth and throat pain, eye burning and abdominal pain but can also result in more serious health problems including heart attack, repeated vomiting and life threatening esophageal damage.
Please talk about the dangers of this challenge with your children. Due to these health risks, students may not participate in the One Chip Challenge at school. Students who attempt to do so may be sent home for the day or have other related consequences.
If you have any questions please reach out, thank you!
Stephanie Cahlamer BSN, RN, CCRN, EMT/FF District Nurse Supervisor
