Five NEW Peter Barker paintings!

Hello again Art Collectors

I'm thrilled to say that I won an award at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Exhibition at the Mall galleries, London, announced at the official opening of the show last Wednesday! It's been 17 years since I won an award there, so it's been a long wait for another, but the competition is tough and the standard of work is very high, so I'm cock-a-hoop!

My Pastel painting below won the Murray's Commercial Fishing Award | First Prize, generously sponsored by Charles Murray of Murray Accountancy Services.

Back to Earth, I have five new oils of mine fresh in the Gallery, all painted en plein air and finished in the studio.

'Sourland Pool'

by Peter Barker RSMA

Oil 10 x 14 inches

£1095

This was a result of a lovely painting day out with John Lines and Nigel Fletcher, by a lake at Farnborough, near my home town of Banbury. I fished here in 1968, just 58 years ago, but as I remember it, it's hardly changed at all. There was a lot of surface weed, unfortunately, but I 'removed' a good bit of it to show some reflections.

'Distant Shower'

by Peter Barker RSMA

Oil 9 x 12 inches

£895

This painting didn't have the best start in life...John Lines and I stopped off at the entrance to a farm near Farnborough, and it was very warm and sunny still. After an hour or so, the sky turned a beautiful blue-grey, and the wind whipped up, and before we knew it, heavy rain started to come down, so we had to beat a hasty retreat, but not before my painting blew off the easel into a pile of wet, sandy dust. Sticky oil paint makes a great receptacle for grit, and I had to wait a few days to scrape and sand off the offending stuff. With the aide memoir of a photo and memory, I managed to finish the painting in the dry studio.

'Moorings at Fenny Compton'

by Peter Barker RSMA

Oil 9 x 12 inches

£895

This one was done on another painting day out with friends by the canal at Fenny Compton. It was glorious weather again, with temperatures up to 38 degrees! I found a shady spot under some trees on the towpath, with some sparkling streaks of sunlight on the water - lovely!

'The White Umbrella'

by Peter Barker RSMA

Oil 10 x 14 inches

£1025

Turning around from the last painting, I painted this view along the towpath, with moor narrowboats tied-up. The owner of the far boat erected a large white umbrella to shade from the vicious heat of the sun, so the title for this painting was right there!

'Rosemary's Roses'

by Peter Barker RSMA

Oil 14 x 10 inches

£1095

I don't profess to be a flower painter, but it make a nice change from my stock landscapes. There is SO much colour in the delicate white rose petals, and it's a real challenge to accurately portray the gentle folds. I didn't want a photographic finish, but rather a looser

painting, with just a suggestion of foliage around the main players, otherwise, the eye wouldn't know where to rest.
