St Dominic – Preacher of Light, Servant of Truth
On 8 August, the Church celebrates the feast of St Dominic, a man whose life was shaped by a burning desire to share the Gospel with clarity, compassion, and conviction. Born in Spain in the late 12th century, Dominic founded the Order of Preachers — known as the Dominicans—whose mission was to proclaim the truth of Christ through preaching, study, and holy living.
Dominic believed that words matter, and that preaching should be rooted in both Scripture and love. He sent his friars not to dominate, but to dialogue—to walk alongside people, especially those struggling with doubt or misinformation. His vision was one of humble scholarship, where learning served the soul and truth was always spoken with grace.
This echoes the teachings of St John Chrysostom, who also saw preaching as a sacred duty. Chrysostom wrote: “The highest of all callings is the preaching of the Word. For nothing is equal to guiding souls and forming Christ within them.”
Both saints understood that preaching is not just about eloquence—it is about living the Gospel. Dominic’s life was marked by simplicity, prayer, and compassion. He travelled lightly, prayed deeply, and wept for the lost. Chrysostom, too, taught that the preacher must first be a witness:
“Let your life be your sermon. If you do not live what you preach, your words will fall to the ground.”
In a world filled with noise and confusion, the legacy of St Dominic reminds us that truth, when spoken with love, can illuminate hearts. His feast invites us to be preachers in our own way—not necessarily with pulpits, but with lives that reflect the light of Christ.
