Hello

Over the past few months, we have received some excellent reports of possible encounters, our team rating several as 'Possible' and one as 'Probable' or 'Encouraging' - a very rare event! Read on for all of those details - we hope you may be able to gain more evidence, one way or the other.

Also over the past few months, I have been working out how to offer you our fabulous 'The search continues ...' t-shirts and finally, we have found a way! Get your order in by the end of July - find out more below.

Our Trust will be considering the value of continuing our mission soon, as we do every year at our AGM, and, as in previous years, hope seems to be alive and well judging by those excellent reports from the top of the South Island down to Stewart Island. And of course other discoveries of lost species around the world continue to give us hope.

Your interest keeps us going, and donations, large or small, also help maintain this effort.

Reports number over 500

We launched our reward campaign in January 2017 to appeal to people like you to help in the search for the South Island kōkako. In April, we received our 500th report of a possible encounter and we have now reached 507. If you see or hear or have seen or heard something that could have been the missing South Island kōkako, please use our 'Log an Encounter' form to let us know.

Lost species found!

We have been excited to read and then share about some lost species that have been rediscovered in recent months.

The Galapagos Rail was found on Floreana Island, Ecuador, and reported earlier this year. This followed the removal of invasive species.

From here in Aotearoa New Zealand, we heard that a second population of the critically endangered Canterbury knobbled weevil had been found - a huge boost for the species.

And this week - remarkable news from the West Coast! Endangered little spotted kiwi seen on mainland for first time in decades.

And the Omiltemi Cottontail Rabbit, last recorded in 1904 in the Sierra Madre del Sur, a mountain range in Mexico, lost to science since 1904, was recently rediscovered!! This rabbit was on the 'Search for Lost Species', which included the South Island kōkako.

We continue to have hope.
