As our world seemingly morphs into a parody of dystopian literature, we tend to cling to familiar pieces and places. We’re here for you, as a familiar third place, but also as hub for education and action. We have books new & old to shed light on political challenges, and we have dystopian classics as well as current cli-fi speculations. We are also fundraising for Cleveland Food Bank to help our neighbors affected by discontinued SNAP programs (both funds & non-perishable goods). Remember when you hunker down to also expand your circle of familiarity to include those around you who may be impacted by changes differently than you are. It is a month of Thanksgiving, and we give thanks to all of you. -Harriett

A fictional, memorable story about Sacajewea that feels like it's more truthful than the stories we have heard before. Stunning language, almost poetry driven.

A complete standout in the horror genre, Stephen Graham Jones's latest novel has been lauded as his masterpiece for good reason. Weaving historical context effortlessly into a gruesome, pain-filled plot, this book draws you in with its prose and keeps your trapped within its teeth.

A deftly told, heartfelt novel about loneliness, belonging, and identity on the border of the Penobscot Reservation, and "what it was like to feel invisible inside the great, great dream of being" and still act with love and decency. A rare story that unfolds wounded masculinity with gentle beauty.

Drake's poems are lush and layered, blunt and beautiful. She expertly manipulates time and prods at generational memory to confront America's history of violence toward Indigenous people and to investigate her own identity as a queer Indigenous woman.

Rebecca Roanhorse's first epic, high-fantasy trilogy epitomizes her deft and textured world-building. The setting draws on indigenous myths and traditions from across the pre-Columbian Americas. Her chorus of main characters have intertwined destinies and competing beliefs, but are also deeply, fallibly, sympathetically relatable. And (unlike so many epic fantasies) the lines between evil and good are drawn not in stark black and white, but in complicated shades of grey in a way that is both heart-wrenching and hopeful.

Fast paced and engaging, Sovereignty shows the struggles of one family against the U.S. legal system. One generation in the 1830s and one in the modern day, each show how Native Americans are impacted by laws made in the interest of white settlers. The play is based on real historical and modern events.

The Firekeeper's Daughter series takes place in the author's Ojibwe community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While technically written for teens, her books deal with pretty adult themes. Each is a slow burn thriller with great characters steeped in Ojibwe culture. Boulley centers a different character in each book, but each involves the same family of Daunis, the Firekeeper's Daughter, so the characters overlap. You will love this series, which could be read as stand alone novels, but is probably best read in order.
