Dear Friends
A good time was had by all
Nigel and Julie, the couple in the photo providing the Celtish event last Saturday, did a fantastic job. Both very talented, they played and sung and spoke in a way which informed as well as entertained. At some points, it seemed to me that it was worship they were leading. A huge thanks to them, of course, as well as the many who contributed to the organisation of the event.
It's not too late…
It’s not too late to buy a ticket for the Friary Brass Band who are returning to St Nicolas this coming Saturday at 7.30pm. Click here for further details including how to buy a ticket. It promises to be a very good event.
Thy Kingdom Come
In this season of Thy Kingdom Come, the period between Ascension and Pentecost, I have appreciated the daily videos which inform, challenge, encourage, provoke. Take a look, for example, at this one from Day 5, with the title of ‘Give us today our daily bread (help with how to pray)’!
If you missed last Sunday
If you were unable to be in church last Sunday, please do take time to listen to and consider Barbara’s sermon on the theme of stewardship, specifically our financial stewardship. This link will take you to her sermon. We are so grateful to each person who gives to the work of the church at St Nicolas; thank you very much. We encourage everyone to give: if St Nicolas is your church please share in the financial support of the ministry here. And if you have not revised your giving for over a year, then now would be a great time to do that. If you have any questions, Nick Garrett, who is our acting Giving Secretary, would be pleased to help:
What helps us grow spiritually and be better at mission?
You are warmly invited to the next meeting of Leatherhead Deanery Synod taking place at All Saints Church, Ockham, 7.00 for 7.30pm on Wednesday 11 June. Dave Gardner, who is a member of the Vision and Strategy Team at the Archbishops' Council of the Church of England, will be addressing the question of how we can make our church community more spiritually healthy. Recent research has shown that the key to spiritual growth for most people is not adopting demanding spiritual disciplines but being part of a healthy church community! If you are planning to be there, please let David in our office know so that he can send you something to read in advance: office@stnicolasbookham.org.uk.
Giving something back to our community
As part of our witness to, and engagement with, the local community, we are contributing to three activities at Village Day on 21 June: the Bucking Bronco, Last Man Standing, and the Tots Alive stall. Would you be willing to offer your time for an hour? Concerning the former two activities, please be in touch with Barbara Holloway (banneholloway@gmail.com). Concerning the latter, please let Celeste know (celeste.rios@stnicolasbookham.org.uk). Your help with any of these activities would be very much appreciated.
Keeping up to date
Thank you so much to David once again for the efficient and timely production of our weekly notice sheet. It is available online (click here) and in church.
And finally…
On Sunday the church celebrates the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost. We recall how God so lavishly poured out his Spirit on the believers soon after Jesus’ ascension. Of course, that wasn’t a one-off; God continues to do so today. And so here’s a short prayer for each one of us.
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, to love what is holy.
(St Augustine)
Wishing you much joy and hope as we approach Pentecost.
