Will Lawmakers Take Tax Relief Seriously…
Or Just Kick The Can Again?

Colorado lawmakers have the opportunity starting this morning to address Colorado’s property tax crisis. This Special Session is Gov. Polis’ response to the landslide loss of the deceptive, needlessly complex, tax-hiking Proposition HH.

Advance Colorado has been calling for a special session since May – when legislators crafted what became Prop HH in secret. Knowing at the time that HH was severely flawed, provided minuscule relief and would grow government by billions, Advance Colorado said a far easier solution was to bring the Legislature in for a focused, transparent and brief session solely to provide significant property tax relief.

Increased Interest In Tax Rollback and Revenue Cap?

As the Special Session neared, several plans proposed various methods for significantly rolling back the coming property tax hike and then capping future tax revenue growth to prevent future spikes.

Advance Colorado has introduced the Colorado Tax Rollback, which would roll back taxes to 2022 levels and then put in place a 4 percent revenue cap going forward. The cap is so popular that it garnered the necessary voter signatures in record time and it’s been certified for next year’s ballot.

In addition, the bipartisan business group Colorado Concern, which supported Proposition HH, proposed a rollback and cap of its own and individual legislators have introduced versions of the plan.

Can You Say ‘Homeowner’?

Property tax relief is needed primarily by homeowners – particularly those on very tight family budgets – who are facing tax increases next year of 40 percent or more. Yet in media statements after the Governor’s Special Session announcement, the Senate President and the House Speaker – the top two leaders in the Legislature – omitted the word “homeowner.”

With 64.9 percent of Coloradans owning their own homes, the leaders may want to rethink this strategy.
