1  The Healing Power of Animal-Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) offers proven mental and physical health benefits. Petting an animal can release serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin—hormones that boost mood and reduce stress. AAT can lower blood pressure, ease pain, and support heart health. For those with anxiety, depression, or PTSD, therapy animals provide a calming presence that promotes communication and builds coping skills. They can also boost motivation and social engagement, especially in children and older adults.

🐾 Lowers blood pressure, pain perception, and stress

🐾 Releases serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin for improved mood

🐾 Helps individuals with anxiety, depression, and PTSD

🐾 Encourages communication and coping strategies

🐾 Improves social interaction and physical activity

2  Why Golden Retrievers Are Ideal Therapy Dogs

Golden Retrievers are ideal for therapy work thanks to their gentle, patient, and friendly nature. They're intelligent, eager to please, and quick to learn new tasks. Their empathy and ability to sense stress make them a calming presence. Therapy dogs like Eli, who supports patients at a ketamine clinic, and Kerith, who comforts firefighters, highlight the breed’s powerful impact.

🐾 Friendly, gentle, and patient temperament

🐾 Highly intelligent and quick learners

🐾 Naturally empathetic and calming presence

🐾 Easily connects with stressed individuals

🐾 Proven track record in therapy and support roles

3 Training A Golden Retriever to Be a Therapy Dog

Training a Golden Retriever for therapy work builds on their social and intelligent nature. Early socialization with people, places, and animals helps them stay calm in any setting. Positive reinforcement—using treats, praise, and toys—encourages good behavior. Key skills include basic obedience and staying focused amid distractions. While self-training is possible, many programs require certification to ensure therapy dogs are dependable.

🐾 Early and extensive socialization is critical

🐾 Positive reinforcement builds desired behavior

🐾 Mastery of basic obedience commands is essential

🐾 Must remain calm and focused in busy environments

🐾 Certification ensures reliability for therapy settings
