Celebrating Indies
This month we celebrate, along with hundreds of other independent bookstores around the country, our very existence! Independent Bookstore Day is April 29, and we invite you to celebrate with us! (More on that later in this newsletter.)
So why should a sector of retail stores behave in this celebratory way? Have you ever heard of Independent Hardware Store Day? Or Independent Furniture Store Day? If you think about it, there are fewer and fewer independent retailers period. Most of us would expect to head to a chain store for a doorknob or a side chair. How is it that bookstores (whose numbers continue to increase) are different?
We think it's because books are so personal. You can fall in love with one, hate one so much you toss it across the room, or fondly remember a picture book that your child had you read over and over. Books inspire feelings and memories; they spark thoughts and new ideas. And so do bookstores! When you walk into an indie bookstore, you are greeted like a friend — because your are! For many of us, an indie bookstore is a home away from home, our personal "happy place." That's what makes them different, and this is what we celebrate.

Fare thee well Lucy!Assistant Manager Lucy leaves us later this month to —
wait for it —
manage HER OWN independent bookstore, Blinking Owl Books in Arcadia! Lucy is embarking on this grand adventure with her mother, Liz, and her brother, Madox. The store carries new and used books, herbs, tea, yarn, and a fun variety of items made by local artisans. Blinking Owl's original location was destroyed in Hurricane Ian, but they recently reopened at 122 W. Oak Street, in downtown Arcadia.
Not gonna lie...we're sad that we won't be working with Lucy after this month. Over these past four years, she's brought us so many new ideas and innovations, we know that she has been fundamental to the success that Copperfish Books has enjoyed. We will miss her authentic passion for books and book people! But we're so excited for her and Blinking Owl Books! We hope you'll visit them soon!

She has been an enthusiastic participant in both clubs since before joining our team, so she's excited about this opportunity to lead the groups! If you haven't tried one of our book clubs, we invite you to give one a try!
