Hello <<First Name>>

It's been an intense summer, encompassing arty things in five counties from Herefordshire to Hampshire.

I've launched a solo show, attended an international art prize opening, met the charcoal makers, led a workshop in 30 degrees and chilled in the forest.

Here's news of a few, plus things to come...

Seen in the Trees

As I arrived in Salisbury, Wiltshire last month, hot, crumpled and a little grumpy after a long journey, I was greeted by the cathedral bells proclaiming 5pm and the glorious architecture of the medieval Cathedral Close. Here I was at Arundells and it was so worth the journey!

‘Seen in the Trees’ is my eighth solo show and one which encompasses the themes I’ve been engrossed in for the last 18 years: the tree, the figure and the places where the two might meet. It looks at trees as core elements of our landscape and how the forms they take now result from their interactions with we humans and other animals. They embody their lives in wood and with it our own histories too.

I was delighted that some works sold in the first week, including ‘Threshold’ which features on the poster. I met so many interesting people at the busy opening night, and was grateful to have the house’s outdoor space to cool down in. Thanks to the whole Arundells team for getting this exhibition off to the best of starts.

Other places to see my work

Fidra Fine Art are currently showing three pieces in their Summer Show, which is open until Sunday 30th August.
Some of my alder inspired works have already gone to new homes but these are still available at Kilmorack Gallery until 30th August.
Visual Arts Scotland ‘Strata’ exhibition in Inverness ends on Monday 31st August and I’ll be there for the closing event 4-6pm.
One of my large charcoal works was selected for The Sidney Nolan Art Prize exhibition, which runs at The Rodd until 3rd October.

Visiting the source

While I was in the south-west of England I took a chance and got in touch with Coates Willow in Somerset, who make the best artists’ charcoal I know. Could I visit and see how they produce it? Might I make a pilgrimage to the source of my primary drawing tool?

Happily the answer was yes and I was given the warmest of welcomes and a full tour of their facilities – now I understand just how specialised and labour intensive a process it is. It was great to be able to thank in person the people who make my beloved burnt sticks.

Owner Nicola Coate was keen to see how I use their charcoal too, and we’re looking at ways we might collaborate in the future – more to come…

Workshops this Autumn

After running a drawing workshop in the garden at Arundells on one of the hottest days of the year, I’m looking forward to some cooler events in the coming season. Thankfully charcoal doesn’t melt!

Due to a cancellation there are now 2 places for my 2 day Charcoal Printmaking workshop at the Old Lock Up Gallery, Cromford, Derbyshire.
More drawing workshops are planned this autumn in The Scottish Borders, Fife and Salisbury - details here.

WORKSHOPS

Twisted chestnut trunks

On a sizzlingly hot July day it was the only place to be – beneath the cooling canopy of these big old sweet chestnut trees. I’d heard about some great trees at Croft Castle in Herefordshire and so, after leaving The Sidney Nolan Trust, I couldn’t resist a visit.

There I found long avenues of large sweet chestnuts, in numbers unlike anywhere else I’ve been. The ridged bark on their squat, richly coloured trunks twisted as if it had been wrung out. Spiralling anticlockwise and often interrupted by huge chaotic burrs, they were a fabulous feast for the eyes and the pencil.

Since the sun was so bright and the light so sharp, my photos were a little disappointing – I now have a reason to find my way back there.

Finally, it's good to be back home in Scotland making plans for the autumn, but I want to thank Wiltshire, Herefordshire, Powys, Hampshire and Somerset for the good times and the good people I've met on my travels. Thanks for reading and if we haven't met yet, I hope to see you in a gallery, workshop or woodland sometime soon.
