SMMS Teacher of the Month: Ms. Taylor Schlabach

Ms. Schlabach was chosen as Teacher of the Month for October by Grade 6 students as they described her as, “super-nice, funny, understanding and takes time teaching.”

“I love finding what the students are curious about and making connections in class,” said Schlabach, now in her second year of teaching Grade 6 Social Studies at South Milwaukee Middle School. “I love to see kids become curious about their learning and ask questions and I think social studies (as a subject) is a great way to create that curiosity.”

Celebrates First Quarter

with All-School Assembly Celebration

On Friday afternoon, November 10th, South Milwaukee Middle School students were treated to an all-school assembly that celebrated both student academic growth and achievement during Quarter 1 of the 2023-2024 school year.

Students and faculty competed together in multiple events, including the three-legged race, musical chairs, tug of war, a free-throw and a basketball-style, free throw game called “Lightning.”

There was also a drawing for prizes such as SMMS promotional wear T-shirts, lanyards, bumper stickers and Milwaukee Brewers bobblehead dolls.

In addition, another of the special highlights of the day was provided by Grade 7 student Jakobe, who accumulated enough PBIS points to purchase a special gift-----the shaving off of the beard and hair of SMMS Social and Emotional Learning Coordinator, Mr. Vince Farina.

The event was a positive and fun way to end Quarter 1 as South Milwaukee Middle School looks ahead to new and exciting challenges in the second quarter of the school year.

Grade 8 Students Graph Their Math:

On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 14, students in Mr. Andy Flater’s Grade 8 Algebra Class had to graph a line represented by a specific linear equation.

Working in pairs, the students were given a mathematical equation and data to calculate.

Each pair of students then had to find both the X- and Y-intercepts as well as the slope of the line prior to graphing. The students also used a table to help them find other solutions to the equation by using the slope of the line.

By graphing their specific lines, the algebra students were given an important visual representation of their calculations.

“Making a graph helps you see the climb of a journey, “said Grade 8 algebra student Rebecca Regan. “From (beginning) equation to finished product.”

Report cards are as a part of school as pencils and chalkboards. The goal of the report card is to give parents an idea of where their students are in their studies and an early-warning sign that they might be struggling in a subject and need some help.
Schools and school districts have report cards too – for many of the same reasons.
In this episode we’re going to hear from some of the people who report the data back to the state, and who also use that data to improve how our schools operate.
We’ll also hear from superintendent Deidre Roemer about some system-wide changes to help South Milwaukee schools improve for students – and on the report card.
