As a child, I started drawing in pencil and worked my way through the encyclopedia, creating images of plants and animals. To relax, I enjoy drawing in a realistic style with a pencil. However, when I paint, I am drawn to abstract art. I never sit down; instead, I work on three paintings on the wall simultaneously. I love creating pieces with bold marks, vibrant colors, and intricate designs, and I'm always amazed at how one well-placed line can speak loudly in a painting. One of my beloved mentors, Skip Lawrence, complimented my skill in creating marks as "almost like a personal calligraphy." His comments prompted me to reflect, and I began to examine each mark in my work with a deeper understanding and a different perspective. My artistic journey and pleasure in creating art stem from trusting my intuition, believing that I intuitively know where the next mark should be or what color will complement the painting. I don't get hung up on the outcome and believe this freedom brings results. It takes courage to express what is in your heart, rather than what others can see or experience. The images shown here are all color studies. I spent a significant part of my career working within the same color palette. When the pandemic hit, I thought, "Life is too short to use the same color over and over," and I bought my first bottle of neon pink paint. I have been hooked on trying lots of new colors ever since. Trying that first bottle of neon pink has colored my world in the best way possible. |

Art is my career and I am in my Northwest studio every day. I have always been inspired by the visual simplicity of ethnic art. During the years after University, I dove into a full time fiber-arts career. Over the years and after extensive travel, I have expanded my interests, media and techniques. My scarves are hand-woven using rayon bouclé and chenille in colors that complement the fashion colors of the Northwest. In my current jewelry, I individually cut each metal element and hand-pound them for texture. The patina and embellishment of the pieces allow them to be unique.
I have always found great energy from connecting with and exploring different cultures. I am excited about sharing these inspirational experiences through teaching and creating individual works of art. I feel I have come full circle and enjoy the seemingly endless stimulation I have developed for myself. In 1974, I started the Weaving Works, a fiber arts supply store and school in the University District of Seattle.
