You Can’t Have Honey Without An Onion

You Can’t Have Honey Without An Onion is a film piece presented as an expanded cinema experience exploring the themes of belonging and alienation of foreign bodies. In this immersive retro-futuristic sci-fi, “alien” bodies fluctuate between being highlighted and disguised from their surroundings, raising questions about the notions of visibility. This audio visual project is meant to evoke an atmosphere of simultaneous displacement and agency, a sensation experienced by minority groups; the feeling of invisibility while still holding transformational power over the spaces they occupy. Through abstract imagery, this work reflects on the intergenerational emotional trauma of normalized suffering that is passed on through women, particularly in the Latin and Arab immigrant cultures.

This piece presents digital video in combination with VHS, Super 8mm film and chroma key techniques, accompanied with an immersive soundscape within an installation of water-like lighting and surfaces. This melancholic yet playful immersive environment invites the audience to reflect on their own experiences of displacement and longing.

Crit Nights at FCG are open to artists at all stages of their career looking to get feedback and inspiration from a growing community of artists in London, ON. Critiques are open to all artists practicing all disciplines, whether it be drawing and painting, sculpture, video, sound, installation, or anything in between; if you’re engaged in something creative and want feedback from like-minded individuals, Crit Nights at FCG is an awesome place to be.

Running every other Friday evening 4:00-6:00 PM, artists are invited to bring their artwork in person or to submit photos/videos to galleryintern@forestcitygallery.com so they may be displayed digitally come the critique. The atmosphere is meant to be casual, relaxed, and generous.

The first Crit Night of 2024 will be held Friday, January 19th from 4:00-6:00 PM. It is not necessary to show up at 4:00– drop-in visits are welcome.

FCG now has a Programming & Community Calendar on the front page of our website, as well as on its own dedicated page. This monthly calendar indicates FCG's weekly hours and exhibition schedule, workshops and events, our bi-weekly Crit Nights, weekly Office Hours, and other occasions.

FCG Office Hours resume for Winter 2024: Speak one-on-one with FCG Director Ruth Skinner on an arts topic or question, seek out practical advice on a grant or exhibition opportunity, or get critical feedback on a project. Office Hours are geared towards artists and arts professionals who are not currently enrolled in a post-secondary program, but anyone is welcome to sign up. These 25-minute meetings are carried out on Zoom. Book your appointment here.

We are delighted to feature this shadow box-framed paper tile from Lauren Chipeur's recent solo exhibition at Forest City Gallery: what on earth is holding the loop up. This exhibition traced the dispersion of elemental sulphur through industrial and everyday life following one particular carrier, the onion.
