Hi there,I’m Alex, and I’m excited to be supporting the EA NYC community as a community coordinator! I‘m grateful to have learned from and gotten to know parts of our community over the past four years, and I’m happy to assist as we grow. Feel free to connect any time! I got into Effective Altruism through a desire to help others as much as possible, and I love hearing different thoughts on the best ways to do that. While I’ve changed my priorities a few times, I’ve focused much of my energy on climate change, existential risks, and factory farming.Otherwise, I’m told I’m generally “friendly and welcoming” 🤷 I enjoy various combinations of learning random things, playing gentle sports, appreciating nature, and practicing bass guitar. Looking forward to seeing you around soon! (By the way, come to the picnic this weekend and say hi 🙂)
~Alex, EA NYC Community Coordinator

For this role, we are looking for candidates with in-depth EA knowledge and managerial experience to oversee a team of four. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, October 9. For any questions, reach out to our team. And when in doubt, please apply! Website Glow-upThe EA NYC website had a makeover! We have a new homepage and several new resource pages! We welcome your feedback. SubgroupsWe have two new pages on our website specific to subcommunities: one for cause area groups and one for professions. Subgroups are a great way to connect with others who share your interests and approach them through an EA lens. Advertised in our last newsletter, the new AI subgroup had its first meeting last week and the legal subgroup will meet the first week of October. There's still time to join, just fill out the survey. We're also re-introducing the “Helping Professions” subgroup, ideal for teachers, therapists, social workers, healthcare workers, etc. Meet up for a meal, talk about your day jobs (or not!), and provide some mutual moral support. If you’re interested, fill out this survey. And we’re gauging interest in a professors subgroup! With over 100 collegiate institutions in NYC (and more in neighboring states), we have many professors of various fields in the EA NYC community. Pending interest, we may launch a professional subgroup! Have subgroup questions or ideas? Contact Alex! What We Owe The Future LaunchWilliam MacAskill’s new book on longtermism, What We Owe The Future, is out now! Get your copy and join our reading discussion group on September 19th. Relatedly, EA is making headlines as William MacAskill is interviewed and featured in the New Yorker’s The Reluctant Prophet of Effective Altruism and in Time Magazine‘s Want to Do Good? This Movement Might Have the Answer. And in broader coverage, Vox discusses EA’s overall trajectory and history in How Effective Altruism Went from a Niche Movement to a Billion-Dollar Force. Participants in this interactive workshop will learn and apply practical skills to identify and alleviate burnout. Stay tuned in future newsletter for further workshops by Megan here in NYC! ICYMI: Living Donor Support Act Passed by NYS AssemblyEarlier this summer, the Living Donor Support Act was passed by the New York State Assembly after receiving unanimous support from the New York State Senate, in large part due to the advocacy of New York kidney donors in the EA community. The bill would reimburse kidney donors for non-medical costs associated with surgery such as wage reimbursement — the median costs are as high as $4,000. The bill was championed by EAs, including Waitlist Zero, which is funded by Open Philanthropy Project and run by NYCer Josh Morrison! The governor still needs to sign the bill into law.
