Our team recently held a Think Tank (Internal Professional Development Day) session with @SECCA! Thank you Alysha for coming out to us for a SECCA overview, and we wanted to share the insights with you.
How did SECCA start? In 1991, SECCA, alongside Family Planning WA (FPWA), secured funding from Lotterywest for projects supporting families of a person living with an intellectual disability.
Initially tasked with training organizations to provide sexuality and human relationships education, SECCA's role evolved. After the Lotterywest funding concluded, SECCA shifted focus to direct counselling, education, and professional development, allowing FPWA to continue and expand the People First Project—a service arm dedicated to human relationship and sexuality education for people with disabilities - Suzanne Paust (Founder of SECCA).
What has been the biggest achievement so far this year? "We had the opportunity to expand our workshops to include a new full day workshop about Gender Identity and Disability which was wonderfully curated and facilitated by a couple of my colleagues. We sold out our SECCA Open Day this year, with a wide range of positive feedback noting the benefit of a more forum style set up and the opportunity to attend specific presentations related to individuals experiences and preferences. Additionally, SECCA was fortunate enough to be approached by Sexual Health & Family Planning ACT to create an accessible consent resource.
What is unique about SECCA's services and resources? SECCA's services are unique when considering the diverse range of services we can provide including counselling, consults and education. The opportunity for us to provide consults free of charge within WA ensures support for the families, therapists, teachers and other support members who may benefit from upskilling or guidance in regard to navigating sexuality and relationships concepts prior to crisis. This also ensures during the triage process that we are able to provide timely support to those within the individuals life to support prior to engagement in counselling services.
Having both a clinical and education arm to the business allows the education team to seek projects which are directly impacting the populations we are supporting and working with.
SECCA resources are unique in the way that all of SECCA's resources are created with a focus on co-design and accessibility. This means that all of our resources are created in consultation with people with disability, written with an easy read format characterised by the inclusion of plain language, one syllable words and the use of illustrations to support comprehension
Are SECCA resources for client or therapists? SECCA resources can benefit both clients and therapists. Some of SECCA's resources are considered to be supported resources (e.g the SECCA App and Feel Safe) therefore are most appropriate when viewed with a support person, however other resources may be appropriate for the client to refer to without support.
How do I make a referral for a client or who should I contact if I am interested? To make a referral you can either call the office or find the information on the website. All you need to do is email scheduling@secca.org.au with the following details:
-Client's first name -Client's last name -Client's date of birth -A suggested emergency contact
Once you have sent this off, the referrer will receive a referral form within 24 business hours which they are required to fill out and return.
What will you be doing over the summer holiday break?
I will be at the beach or in some body of water, eating fruit and spending time with friends and family." - Alysha.
Thank you Alysha for sharing some insights on SECCA and some facts about yourself!
