API RADIAN IN LARGE PETROLEUM EQUIPMENT INSPECTION AND ALIGNMENT

Large Petroleum Equipment Leaves No Room for Error

Large petroleum equipment demands precision. The API Radian laser tracker enables fast, reliable 3D measurement for alignment, feature verification, and GD&T analysis, helping teams reduce risk and inspect with confidence.

The Challenge: Restoring Alignment

After long-term use caused system components to shift, a South American petroleum company needed to restore alignment across key facility equipment. With a pulley-driven motor system, precise geometry verification was essential to support correction within a 0.1 mm tolerance and avoid vibration, wear, and performance issues.

How the Measurement Was Performed

The engineer positioned the API Radian laser tracker around the equipment and collected data using a high-precision SMR target sphere with an integrated prism. As the target touched key inspection points, the tracker captured live 3D coordinates in real time and sent the data directly to measurement software on a laptop.

Turning Data Into Action

Within the software, the team used points and point clouds to construct lines, planes, and geometric features for analysis. They evaluated flatness, parallelism, perpendicularity, roundness, and other critical relationships, then compared the results against CAD models. This turned measurement data into immediate decisions, corrections, and usable reports.

A Practical Advantage in the Field

A key advantage of the API Radian system is its ability to support live adjustment in the field. Operators can monitor component position in real time and use deviation feedback to guide corrections more efficiently. This is especially valuable on large petroleum equipment, where adjustments are complex and time-consuming.
