While the Bible does not explicitly state the perpetual virginity of Mary, certain passages are interpreted to support this belief. In Matthew 1:23, we read about the prophecy that “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,” which underlines Mary’s virginity at Jesus’ conception. This passage sets her apart as fulfilling a unique role our salvation history.

Likewise, in Luke 1:34, when the angel announces that she will bear a son, Mary’s response “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” emphasises her virginity at the time of the Annunciation. This acknowledgment suggests a commitment to virginity even before embracing her divine calling. The early Church Fathers reinforced these interpretations, viewing them as indicators of her lifelong dedication to God.

At St Chrysostoms, Mary’s perpetual virginity is a sign of her complete devotion to God’s will. By maintaining her virginity, Mary lives with a singular focus on God’s purpose. But, then, how does that influence our everyday lives?  In relationships, at work, and within our communities, we are encouraged to live with the same faith-driven purposefulness that Mary exemplified. To integrate moments of reflection and spiritual renewal into our daily routines. Perhaps setting aside time each morning for prayer or meditation, allowing for a mindful start - it's in these quiet moments that we can set intentions for the day, focusing on how we can be vessels of Christ's love and grace.

In practical terms, we can emulate Mary's dedication to God’s will by choosing those actions that mark us out as followers of Christ. Honesty and integrity, even when shortcuts are tempting. Volunteer our time to support those in need, fostering a spirit of service and compassion. Those kind words, that mean so much, to a homeless person at Tesco’s door.  In our personal relationships, we can strive to listen more deeply and offer forgiveness readily, following Mary's example of grace and patience. 

In a world full of distractions, Mary's devotion to God’s will invites us to remain focused on what truly matters - living a life dedicated to faith, service, and love, as she did.

Every 6 years, each Church of England parish needs to generate a new Electoral Roll, which is the membership list of our parish community. It’s a list of all who worship here regularly in person and who consider themselves part of our parish community.  The deadline for signing up is the 16th of May 2025. 

If you have worshipped regularly in person at St Chrysostom’s for at least six months, you can be enrolled. Being on the Electoral Roll gives you a right to vote in parish meetings and to play your part in the decisions made at St Chrysostoms.
