Welcome back to The 90%!
"90% of the time you will play an average match which means 9 out of 10 times you have to become a great problem solver." This nugget comes from @Tennis_Haus and echoes an idea I recently shared about the zone (spoiler: it's in the podcast linked below).
Perspiration

Between Christmas and New Year's, I had the opportunity to appear on Dennis Silver's 19th Hole Podcast. While our conversation centered around golf, the concepts can be applied to any type of performance. Check it out here (~47:00).

Inspiration

Luke "The Nuke" Littler is just 17 years old, but last week, he became the youngest world champion in the history of professional darts. While American darts is largely relegated to bars, basements, and garages, it is a big money, high stakes competition in Europe. The task is relatively simple - throw three darts in a row at a target 5' 8" off the ground, from a mark that is 7' 9 1/4" away from the board. The combination of precision and pressure, however, can make it a challenging task.

Littler has managed sky-high expectations and remained focused while winning over a $1.2 million dollars, gaining 1.5 million Instagram followers, and hanging out with Max Verstappen and his heroes at Manchester United. He is a relatable, down-to-earth, every-man figure who is taking darts to never-before-seen levels of popularity.

Littler's composure at a young age sets him apart. He has an uncanny ability to manage the surging adrenaline and emotional swings associated with competing for big money. In essence, he creates a bubble of concentration and calm while surrounded by boisterous and enthusiastic crowds. Carrying on conversations with the fans (and himself), his presence is impressive.  After poor throws, he resets with the simple advice of, "Just relax." When asked what has made Littler so good, his former coach, Karl Holden said, "You need to learn to win, and to win you've got to learn to lose, and when you lose you don't like it. That's when you start winning." Littler has 15 years of winning to draw on, as he started throwing magnetic darts at 18 months old and progressed to a regulation board at the age of five. His performance in the last year is leading some to speculate that he could reach the current record of 16 world titles. That might be premature, but Littler's personality and mental game just might be the combination to required to do it.
Preparation

There is an episode of Ted Lasso (season 3, episode 6) that features the word gezellig. Gezellig is a Dutch word that doesn’t have a direct English equivalent. While it is often translated as coziness, it also has connotations of togetherness, the warmth of belonging, and the idea of individual well-being that overflows to others. It is turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. As I thought about the concept, it occurred to me that there is a definite similarity to the term belongship. According to Terminus co-founder Sangram Vajre, belongship arises when people feel that they’re trusted, that there is a safe environment, and that they are cared for. To create this sense, Vajre recommends the PEAK framework:
  • P – Picture of Success - an actual image of what success looks like
  • E – Extreme Focus - making every decision in pursuit of the picture of success
  • A – Authenticity - the genuine expression of beliefs and values
  • K – Kindness - the generous consideration of others
In both cases, gezellig and belongship can be created through welcoming environments, shared experiences, and an emphasis on the simple joys of togetherness rather than things. As you consider your team, business, or organization, give some thought to how you can also produce this experience.
