I'm into horror stories that take place in modern settings, so I really enjoyed that most of this collection is set in urban Argentina. Some of the stories captivated me, some grossed me out, and some confused me, but all of them made me think.
The ones I'm still thinking about are:
Our Lady of the Quarry, told by a group of mean-girl narrators competing for a boy's attention;
The Kids Who Came Back, where children missing for years start to reappear, looking exactly the same as the day they vanished; and
Where Are You, Dear Heart? about a woman with a fetish for irregular heartbeats who becomes entangled with a man living with a life-threatening cardiac disease.
This collection isn’t for everyone, but if you’re into horror and you’re curious about how fear translates between Latin American and North American cultures (and you don’t mind a bit of gore) you should definitely give it a read.
