Although not quite the warm weather we expect for July, we hope for some brighter weather over the next month and that crops are flourishing.
We start the week welcoming a new Labour government. Which we hope will bring with it more support for British farmers, as our Network Coordinator Suzy was recently demanding for in the Big Issue Magazine. We have been looking at all the parties manifestos and will be writing to the Labour government to tell them all about community supported agriculture in the UK and its numerous environmental, social and public health benefits that deserve support and funding.
We have just published our latest member survey results which paint a picture of the important impact of CSA in the UK.
Recently we were at Groundswell Agriculture (photo above), encouraging people to get involved in their local CSA and Suzy our Network Coordinator gave a talk about how CSA can deliver connection to food, land and people. The recording of this talk 'It's Lush - linking up suppliers and hubs' should be up on the Groundswell website soon.
We are happy to announce two exciting CSA training courses - Grow Your Own CSA with Cae Ta and CSA start-up and scaling-up course at Chagford CSA, are coming up this Autumn. We hope to meet some of you at the Organic Growers Gathering which we are sponsoring this year, see the Training & Events section below.
We are hugely grateful to The Pebble Trust for offering us a further two years of funding to continue working in Scotland promoting CSA and supporting two Scottish CSAs to be part of our 2024 Incubator scheme.
We hope you enjoy these longer days of Summer. The CSA Network UK team

General Election 4th July 2024 and the new Labour government- We are writing a letter that you can send to your local elected candidate to ask them to support CSA in your area, you can even invite them to visit your local CSA farm, keep an eye on our website.
- Sustain UK have produced a really helpful summary of the main parties manifestos and what they included about sustainable food and farming here.
Joint letter to new government – support UK horticultureAs part of a larger collective with other organisations, we have sent a briefing to new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed. We are asking the new government to go further than the previous government’s Blueprint to grow the UK fruit and vegetable sector and deliver a bold cross-departmental horticulture strategy, to ensure a resilient fruit and veg supply. Our asks for the new Labour government...We will be writing to the new government asking them to offer adequate funding and support to CSAs. We are pleased to see that the Labour manifesto commits to introduce a land-use framework and to make Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes work for farmers and nature. We hope that like all of the other parties committed, the farm payments budget will be increased and new funds will be offered for farmers including CSAs. We are also pleased to see the Labour commitment that local areas are to be given more power over planning, which will hopefully support farm and CSA infrastructure. Additionally that they commit to a 50% local public sector food procurement target. From the Liberal Democrats manifesto we hope that the Labour government takes forward the suggestion that farmers receive proper advice on transitioning to new environment farm payment schemes. Also that farmers are rewarded to reduce the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. We also hope that Labour recognises the Green Party commitment to rebalance power between big food companies and local alternatives such as local food networks, community-supported agriculture and other co-operatives. And to support a move to mixed farming and implement new horticulture support for fruit and vegetable production. We would like the Labour government to take this forward and make some more commitments to the horticulture sector.

A thank you you to Elaine for her generous contribution to support two new CSA start-ups in our incubator programme, to receive support and mentorship over the next two years.
Elaine says: I feel this is an important initiative to support. I have very much appreciated the opportunity to be involved with our two local farms; I choose to buy from them because I trust the way that they produce my food, because I can connect with the people who are growing my vegetables, and because there is transparency in their processes. It's also important to me that these farms have various sorts of community outreach in place - giving opportunities to children to connect with nature, and involving all sectors of the community (not just those that are buying from them). I would love other people to be able to feel part of the community around an agricultural initiative of this type. I feel that, over the course of my lifetime, we have become more separated from the food that we eat, and I would like to support something that brings us back closer. I would also like to support farms and other food-producing initiatives that want to ground themselves with the community.
Also, this particular project seems so worthwhile - mentoring people who want to deepen their connection with the community and learn how to make a success of a community-supported agricultural venture opens so many doors, not just for the farms themselves, but for people who come into contact with them. It feels like starting something that could ripple outwards and cause beneficial change in so many ways.
