Introducing our Indigenous Data Champions Fellows

The Indigenous Data Champions Fellowship consists of a cohort of 20 Tribal staff, Indigenous leaders, professionals, and community representatives in the U.S.

In this fellowship the cohort exchanges knowledge, creates tools, and builds relationships necessary to enhance Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDSov) and Governance (IDGov) within their communities. We've had the pleasure of getting to know this cohort's amazing fellows, and we're excited to introduce them to the world, and the beloved members of the Indigenous Data Alliance too!

Podcast with insights and foresights on the IEEE 2890-2025 Recommended Practice for Provenance of Indigenous Peoples' Data

"Relational Science" is a thought-provoking podcast that delves into the intricate web of relationality in the realms of knowledge, data, information, and technology.

This month co-hosts, Sierra Hicks and WariNkwi Flores, continued their examination of Part II of the insights and foresights on the IEEE 2890-2025 Recommended Practice for Provenance of Indigenous Peoples' Data. IDA co-director Stephanie Carroll chaired the Indigenous Data Working Group for the creation of this groundbreaking standard. In the podcast episode, Sierra and WariNkwi's analysis focuses on sections 7.3 through 14, exploring key aspects of data creation, transfer, storage, and publication, powerfully emphasizing the essential importance of safeguarding Indigenous provenance information throughout the data lifecycle.

The session culminated in a compelling discussion of the disclosure limitations imposed by Indigenous communities, underscoring the fundamental function of community governance on decision-making processes and privacy.

Join PhD students WariNkwi Flores and Sierra Hicks as they engage in insightful dialogues with researchers, exploring systems of knowledge production and tackling pressing questions about our futures, pasts, and presents.

Partnerships for Indigenous-Led ELSI Research (PIER) - Community Scholars Program Announcement

The Center for the Ethics of Indigenous Genomic Research (CEIGR) introduces the Community Scholars Program as part of the newly funded Partnerships for Indigenous-led ELSI Research (PIER).

PIER, led by Southcentral Foundation in partnership with the University of Oklahoma and University of Washington, promotes meaningful collaboration with AI/AN communities and AI/AN-serving health systems toward Indigenous-driven approaches to genomic research. The Community Scholars Program is for individuals interested in gaining mentorship and experience in Tribal health research.

Please feel free to share this opportunity with interested individuals and partners across your network.

Potential applicants can attend online informational sessions throughout March (see Information Session info) to learn more about the program and ask questions of the PIER team. Final applications will be due April 30, 2026 (see Application link).
