Community has always been at the heart of what Charissa Berryman has loved about Bear Creek Camp. As a camper, her favorite part of camp was always the overnights. “Everyone had their jobs. You built your fire, you had to collect firewood and go to the creek to get water. You would cook together and then go off and explore. It was a great team building experience that we didn’t even realize we were learning and growing – we thought we were just hanging out in the woods.”
Charissa joined BCC’s year-round team as Business Manager in February 2020. Over the past five years, she has served as a key connection point for growing our camp community. She is often the first person anyone talks to when they call or email the office, she manages the registration process for summer camp and retreats, and coordinates payments, donations, and all things finance. As with everyone on the BCC team, she also wears many different hats throughout the year, helping out with high ropes, rental group hosting, food service, and more.

One part of camp that Charissa finds a lot of joy in is the camp store. During the summer, Charissa steps away from the office and runs the register when campers come down for their afternoon snacks. “I love the short interactions I get with every kid. Asking them how they’re doing, seeing their faces light up when they get a special treat. It’s extra cool for me because campers start out as a name on a computer screen when they register and then they’re there in the store and I can see how they’re having a great time at camp. Some kids you can really see grow throughout a week; from the first time they step into the store kind of nervous and quiet, and by the end of the week they’re joking with friends and rushing out to play carpetball or get to the next activity with their quest group.”
In the lead up to summer camp, Charissa’s role as phone and email answerer is critical. “I like being able to help people out, answer questions, ease nerves, and find solutions. Especially for first time camp families, I love that I’m able to share about the impact camp has had on me and the positives I see in our campers and staff – that they will be okay without their phone for a week and will connect with so many new friends and have so much fun.”
Charissa is one piece of a gigantic support network that enables the BCC experience for campers. “Moving from camper to staff, it was amazing to me just how many pieces go into making camp run that campers never see. And I think that’s the whole point, that we don’t want them to realize what’s ‘behind the curtain’ so they can just have an incredible time connecting with their faith, experiencing nature, and building friendships that will potentially last a lifetime.”
