Paint Me A Road Out Of Here!
Dear friends and family,

Teen Vogue published an article about our new film Paint Me a Road Out of Here! Writer Abigail Glasgow shares insights within the larger context of mass incarceration in NYC today.

The article highlights the metaphors and connections between Faith Ringgold’s painting For the Women’s House at Rikers, Mary Enoch Elizabeth Baxter’s powerful art, and the unrelenting, unjust, punishing Rikers Island jail: “A beautiful painting went into Rikers and came out destroyed. The same goes for the countless individuals who end up on Rikers, 90% of whom are being held pre-trial.”

It also points to the egregious irony: “The painting was meant to evoke freedom in a place devoid of just that,” Glasgow writes of Faith’s For the Women's House. “After its installation in 1972, the painting remained until, 20 years later, it went missing."

Having spoken with many of those featured in the film, Glasgow weaves together the rich backstory and potential future of the film along with what it represents more broadly. How do we envision, plan, and achieve a world without prisons or jails? The stories of Faith’s painting and Mary’s work lead us in the right direction.

Give the article a read here, and spread the word!

Warmly,
The Aubin Pictures team
