Dear Rocket Families,
When you were a kid, did you ever do a dare? My mind goes immediately to the triple-dog-dare in A Christmas Story where the character Flick gets his tongue stuck to the frozen metal flag pole in the schoolyard. Thankfully, we haven’t had that particular emergency at the Middle School. We are, however, bringing back the old-school dare in a way that will help our students and families grow as people in a fun and challenging way.
The program is called Character Strong and it helps out students grow their social skills and explore and learn more about their emotions.
A fun part of the program is Character Dares – activities that can be done as a family at home. In the last newsletter, I wrote about how middle school children need their parents more than ever.
While that’s true, it’s also true that it’s harder to connect with children in this developmental stage. Consider doing the Character Dare below – make it a game – and an easy way to sneak in some quality time! If it helps, tell them it’s homework from their principal. (It’s not. This is completely voluntary.)
Share photos from your experience on the District Facebook page (there’s a post about it at 5 p.m. Friday) or share your experience with the short survey below. We’d like to share your (anonymous) responses in a future newsletter!

Dare: Have everyone write down a list of 3-5 things that they would appreciate if someone helped them with, said to them, or shared with them. Put the list in a public place and see if, each week, everyone can get something checked off the list!

Our school will soon be implementing i-Ready® Diagnostic which will provide our students with an innovative diagnostic assessment in Reading and Math.
i-Ready Diagnostic helps teachers effectively assess their students and then provide individualized instruction based on each student’s unique needs.
i-Ready Diagnostic gives students an adaptive assessment in reading or math. An adaptive assessment is a test that automatically adjusts the difficulty of the questions according to each student’s performance in order to determine his or her abilities in reading or math.
It is designed to do this until the assessment finds exactly the level at which the student is performing. Therefore, your child will certainly see some items above his or her level.
Encourage your child to independently complete the test to the best of his or her ability, and know that it is okay to get questions wrong.

This program is a terrific introduction for middle school students who are interested in learning the basics of tennis.
Instructors will go over the fundamentals of tennis focusing on basic stroke development including forehands, backhands, volleys, and serves.
No prior experience is necessary, and racquets will be provided if you do not have one, however, we encourage participants to bring their own.
Camp will run September 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 from 3:30-4:30 pm
