A (Safety) Newsletter from the School District of South Milwaukee
The safety of students and staff is the most important concern for the School District of South Milwaukee. Now that the 2024-25 school year has begun and students and parents have settled into the back-to-school routine, it's important to review some terminology and practices used in our schools.

When there is an Emergency

Leer en Espanol
School Districts, administrators, principals, teachers, and staff need to be ready to act in an emergency—whether medical or suspicious—on a school campus.

South Milwaukee schools all use the same language and actions in the event of an emergency and are committed to keeping parents informed about emergencies at their students' schools.

What is needed from parents and guardians:

Keep the phone lines clear: do not call your school or the District Office so office staff can help manage emergency personnel.
The District will send a phone message and email when the emergency happens and then send regular updates (even if nothing has changed) until the situation is over (read more below).

Ensure your safety and that of others: Do not come to the school. Visitors will not be admitted, students will not be released until the situation is over.

In Our Schools, Students Ignore the Door
These signs are posted at our schools' exterior doors and students are instructed to never open a door for anyone. All visitors are required to enter through the main office entrance of a school and obtain a visitor's badge. Please reinforce this message with your student.
We are all responsible for keeping our school community safe. If you see something, say something. If you're concerned or worried about a child, it's better to report and be wrong than keep it to yourself and be right.

South Milwaukee schools proudly participate in SPEAK Up and SPEAK Out - a state-wide anonymous tip line for residents to share safety concerns about our children.
SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT - Learn More or Report a Concern
In an effort to keep students in school as much as possible, the District has developed procedures under the direction of a family physician and District Nurse to stock and use some over-the-counter (OTC) medications to address minor illness or discomfort.

The District needs parental permission to give these over-the-counter medications to your student. Please review the list, sign this form, and return it to the school office if you give permission for your student to receive these OTC medications.

**Parents may provide their own Over the Counter Medication for their student. Family must complete the Family Provided OTC form and provide the medication in the original packaging. This will be dosed based on bottle instructions, unless otherwise noted in a signed doctor's note.

Watch for Students in Crosswalks
South Milwaukee is one of those special small towns where many students can walk to school. But that means we, as a community, must watch out for them in the mornings and afternoons.

Please remember to stop at all crosswalks where pedestrians are present, follow the directions of the crossing guards, and only let your student out of the car when you are at the curb and not in the street.

Remember, children don't always follow the rules of the road or cross safely. Please be extra cautious around schools, especially between 7-8:30 a.m. and 2:45-4 p.m.

If you're dropping off or picking up, please be patient with other parents and students crossing the street.

High School parents, please see this page for the new drop-off and pick-up procedures, and watch your inbox and the school website for updates.
If your student rides their bike to school, make sure they have a lock. Please ask them to use the bike racks, not a tree or pole!
