A Newsletter from the School District of South Milwaukee
The School District of South Milwaukee is participating in a statewide grant called the Research to Practice Inclusive Communities (RPIC) Project.
A foundational belief of the RPIC project is that students belong in their learning communities, in an environment with their peers, and educators are responsible for designing high-quality teaching and learning environments for each and every student within that inclusive learning community setting.
The purpose of this survey is designed to capture the highest aspirations of educators, students, and families for the kinds of schools they would dream of for themselves or a child they love. Multiple choice tests cannot assess student characteristics like curiosity, love of learning, special expertise, or resourcefulness.
These and other skills frequently termed "21st century skills", are characteristics beyond the scope of current standardized tests. Thus, we are using this measure that attempts to capture these essential elements of learning.
We hope parents and staff participate, students are also being given a modified version of this survey appropriate for their age groups.
Please join us in completing the short survey (one per family) by May 19th. Important note: This is a different survey than the Middle School survey sent out this week.
Music teachers are exceptionally hard-working, talented and energetic people in schools full of dedicated hard-working and talented teachers.
In this podcast I’m excited to share some music from our students and introduce just two of South Milwaukee’s own seriously talented music teachers to explain how we teach music and the varied and valuable benefits of a good education in music.
Watch some impressive physical acting by Mrs. Hongsermeier and see our juniors tackle some pretty intense (and sweet) statistical challenges!
Public Schools Advocacy Event - April 16 5-7p.m.
Join us for Speak Up for your Public Schools Event on Wednesday, April 19 from 5-7 p.m. at the high school.
Plans are still being finalized, but the event will include a letter-writing opportunity, an art build that enables family members to pour their creativity into artistic and powerful symbols that celebrate and stand up for public education.
Your support for public education is critical as the next two years of public funding is decided in the Wisconsin Legislature.
As you may know, the School Board is grappling with a $1.6 million budget deficit due to two years of zero-percent funding increases and the rising costs due to inflation.
Without more funding, the Board will have to reduce costs in an already lean budget.
Please get informed by watching a board meeting online or in person, listening to the Budget episode of this podcast, read about it on the District webpage (see next article) and come out on April 19.
We need your help to tell our elected officials how important public education is and that you want them to support it so every student receives a free, appropriate education.
It's budget season for school districts across Wisconsin. The School District of South Milwaukee is facing a deficit that the School Board has to decide how to close. Click below to learn more about the budget and what that might mean for the 2023-24 school year.
Beginning on March 5th, 2023, Milwaukee County Transit Service Route 52 that has stops on 15th Ave outside of the Middle School will change.
