Racquel Rowe. The Centre of the World Was the Beach. Installation shot by Teresa Rangel.
Racquel Rowe - The Centre of the World Was the Beach January 11 - March 8, 2025
There's only a couple more weeks left to check out The Centre of the World Was the Beach by Racquel Rowe, on view until Saturday, March 8th!
Drawing inspiration from Dionne Brand's A Map to the Door of No Return, The Centre of the World Was the Beach is a meditation on migration, memory, and identity. Anchored by themes of diasporic connection, domestic spaces, and culinary rituals, the exhibition explores how landscapes—both physical and interior—become sites of cultural continuity and transformation.
Through a series of video works, photographs, and intimate installations, the exhibition transforms the gallery into a living room, evoking the warmth and familiarity of shared histories. Each monitor plays a story, weaving together personal and collective narratives of the Caribbean diaspora, where migration reshapes domestic life, rituals anchor identity, and the beach becomes a symbolic threshold of loss and becoming.

Check out the Pier Wall Exhibit, The Juice Box
Drop by and check out The Juice Box on display until March 1st, a collaborative art exhibit by artist-caregivers and their children depicting a fantasy art space using collage and mixed media.
Children and caregivers were invited to visit Forest City Gallery on January 25th for a workshop led by artist Michelle Wilson where imagination knew no bounds, to create this fantasy art building. Thank you to all who participated! Funded in part by Balancing Act Canada, as part of their Level UP! initiative, which advocates for greater equality, accessibility, and inclusion for artist parents and caregivers in Canada.
This event also kicked off a new survey to establish a parent-artist collective. In collaboration with Michelle Wilson, Forest City Gallery seeks to create a supportive community for artist-parents. This collective will address their unique needs, allowing them to nurture their creative practices while ensuring a safe environment for both parents and children.
