Arushi just got back from a 2 week vacation visiting her family in India; she's been thinking a lot about Open Phil’s new work on South Asian air quality since then, and is hopeful that Rocky has been thinking about learning to edit Wikipedia and what other opportunities might be out there to positively influence what information people are exposed to. If you’d be interested in forming an EA NYC Wikipedia editing group, shoot her an email!

Reading Group: Mushtaq Khan |
This month, we'll be listening to (or reading the transcript of) 80000 Hours' interview with Mushtaq Khan, on using institutional economics to predict effective government reforms. Some of the most important factors shaping the fate of nations are their structures of power: who is powerful, how they are organized, which interest groups can pull in favors with the government, and the constant push and pull between the country’s rulers and its ruled. While traditional economic theory has relatively little to say about these topics, institutional economists like Mushtaq have a lot to say, and participate in lively debates about which of their competing ideas best explain the world around us. Mushtaq’s specialties are anti-corruption and industrial policy, where he believes mainstream theory and practice are largely misguided. Make sure to join the #reading-group channel on the EA NYC Slack ( join here) to discuss throughout the month. Stick around since that's where we decide on the books for future months!

We hope 2022 is off to a great start for you, and we hope to see you in person again soon! Cheers, Arushi & Rocky
