Welcome to the March 2026 edition of JALTCALL News!

We are springing into spring here at JALTCALL. It's truly a wonderful time to be in Japan, unless you suffer from seasonal allergies (achoo!)

In this edition of JALTCALL News, we have a reminder about our upcoming symposium, updates about the JALTCALL 2026 Conference, and a call to participate in a research project.

We're always open to feedback and suggestions, so please don't hesitate to get in touch. We're also happy to include member contributions to the newsletter. If you have anything you'd like to share, get in touch with Bradley Irwin (Publicity Chair) at publicity@jaltcall.org.

1. JALTCALL Spring Symposium (2026 Edition)

Date: March 7, 2026 (Saturday)
Time: 12:30 - 17:00
Venue: Kyoritsu Women’s University, Tokyo
Participation: ¥1,000 (¥500 for JALT members)
Registration: https://forms.gle/RXpaRkTbTLZpZ3cw6
Schedule: Tentative Schedule

After the resounding success of our 2025 Spring Symposium (in collaboration with the EUROCALL AI SIG), JALTCALL is pleased to announce the 2026 iteration of this event. This year’s spring symposium, focusing on Teacher Development, will be held face-to-face on March 7, 2026, at Kyoritsu Women’s University in central Tokyo.

For this symposium, we want to do something a little different. While the JALTCALL Conference continues to showcase high-quality research, this event places skills development at the forefront. The focus will be on hands-on, interactive workshops, guided discussions, and collaborative sessions designed to help teachers build skills they can immediately use in their classrooms.

Participants should be ready to roll up their sleeves, dust off their teaching and technology skills, and actively take part. Be sure to bring your own devices! Sessions will emphasize practice, experimentation, and shared problem-solving in areas related to CALL, technology-enhanced language learning, and classroom innovation.

We have an exciting and dynamic schedule planned. Check here for details about speakers, session abstracts and more.

To encourage conversation and connection, the event will have a networking-focused atmosphere, with refreshments and snacks provided. The afternoon programme will run from 12:30 - 17:00. Participants are welcome to bring food and gather informally beforehand.
2. JALTCALL 2026 Conference Update

Dates: Friday, June 12 – Sunday, June 14, 2026
Theme: Prevail or Fail?
Venue: Konan University, Hirao School of Management “CUBE” (Nishinomiya Campus) — a 5-minute walk from Hankyu Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station (HK08), right between Osaka and Kobe.

This year, we received +200 proposals, making the review process somewhat challenging! Submission results were sent out on March 1 (on time)! Hopefully, you've checked your inbox and received some good news. If revisions have been requested, you are strongly advised to make them before the March 15th deadline.

Early-bird registration has begun and tickets can be purchased on our conference website. Please note that all presenters must register before the April 30 early-bird deadline.

Please check the conference website for more details.

3. Call to participate in a research study

We're always happy to help out JALTCALL members and one of our officers reached out with a request for participation in a short, online survey.

How do you feel about generative AI in academic writing? Please help with this anonymous survey on authorship, responsibility, and AI use in higher education. Participants should be university teachers and researchers in Japan (AI users and non-users welcome).

Your responses will help inform AI policy and practice in academia.
