June 20, 2025 Colma, CA
This regional conference will offer a day of immersive learning opportunities to explore the value that trees provide to the many beings that call the urban forest home! Wildlife habitat value of mature, dead, and dying trees, and the benefits of safely preserving spars, snags, and nurse logs in the landscape will be discussed, as well as the diverse potential of wood reclamation to give trees a second life, which has been demonstrated throughout the grounds of Cypress Lawn Arboretum in recent seasons. An afternoon of in situ demonstrations for the proactive habitat tree service practices of coronet pruning and nest cavity carving will take place out in the field, and the program day will conclude with an optional guided forest bathing experience to foster a deeper connection with the more-than-human world that lives and grows all around us.

California Urban Tree Canopy Viewer and Change Analysis Tool
CAL FIRE and the USDA Forest Service are proud to announce the release of the California Urban Tree Canopy Viewer and Change Analysis Tool. This interactive mapping tool shows California’s urban tree canopy and how it has changed over time, using 2022 high-resolution (60cm) urban tree canopy for all 2020 Census-designated urban areas in the state of California, as well as canopy-related change between 2018 and 2022. The mapping tool overlays the tree canopy layer with other information, including census data, urban heat severity, and the extent of the wildland urban interface and intermix. These layers provide context to help us understand differences in tree canopy across communities. Also available is the Tree Canopy File Geodatabase for download on the UCF Hub site.
While the analysis of the canopy data is still ongoing, it already provides insights about California’s urban forests. For instance: California’s urban tree canopy covers 14.45% of the state's urban areas in 2022. From 2018-2022, we have generally experienced a net gain in tree canopy in the areas of Sacramento and surrounding Central Valley, San Diego and Imperial Counties, and large parts of Los Angeles and the Inland Empire. Conversely, we have experienced a general net loss of tree canopy from 2018-2022 in the San Francisco Bay Area, North Coast, Eastern Riverside County, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Redding.
