Facilities Planning is Moving Forward!


California State Parks invites YOU to attend an Open House Event to share updates about progress on the Big Basin Redwoods State Park Facilities Management Plan. The Basis of Design document for the plan is now complete and will set the stage for site planning and design considerations at the park as new facilities are built to replace those lost in the 2020 CZU Fire.

Please drop by in person on Monday February 12th, between 5:30 and 7:00pm at the Felton Community Hall to learn more. There will be a presentation at 6PM.  Can’t make the meeting? You can also review the Basis of Design Document and summary of engagement on the project website.

The project team next will develop design alternatives in the second planning stage of the process, and the second round of community engagement including an open house will take place Summer of this year.

Four Additional Miles of Roads and Trails Reopened!

Access to Mt McAbee has been restored via Hihn Hammond Road. Mt McAbee Overlook sits at 1,739 ft (530m) and features expansive views of the West Waddell Wilderness stretching down to Rancho del Oso and the Pacific Ocean. Also, the newly reopened Blooms Creek Connector trail enables visitors to access Hihn Hammond Road to Mt McAbee via the Main Day-use area with the option to loop back on Middle Ridge Road. Research Symposium

On November 15 the Santa Cruz Mountains Bioregional Council held their second research symposium highlighting scientific research being conducted in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. 

Speakers shared studies on fire impacts on stream and riparian conditions, recovery of understory vegetation, impacts to feeding birds, redwood recovery mechanisms, and a special presentation about the parks reimagining planning effort.
