Family, food and the first feasts of the season...

This year, Passover began on April 5th with the traditional seder dinner being held Wednesday and Thursday, and the holiday continuing until next week. During this time, leavened bread, like our sourdough, is replaced by unleavened bread called matzah. This tradition is based on the story of the Jews fleeing Egypt and not having the time to properly leaven their bread (let it rise naturally). There are many dishes that can be made with matzah, but the one I'm most fond of is the breakfast dish, Matzah Brei. It's made by crushing matzah by hand, stirring in eggs and browning the mixture on both sides in an oiled pan. The finished brei is cut into meal portions and served with various toppings such as butter, honey, sour cream and/or preserves. Regardless of your religious preference, Matzah Brei is worth making (and eating) at least once in your life!

Right in the middle of Passover week is Easter Sunday, another day of traditional feasting. Unlike Thanksgiving or Christmas, Easter is not locked into a traditional main course. Back in the day, lamb was the center of attention on the Easter table. Somewhere along the line, ham took the place of lamb in the United States for that purpose. Technically, you can make anything your family likes for this occasion. You can even forgo a main course and have a charcuterie and various small plates to nosh on throughout the evening. Or have an open-face cheese melt station with different kinds of cheeses and toppings on a tasty slice of our artisan sourdough bread. Whatever you intend to do, Breadness, along with the butters, jams, honeys, balsamics and tapanades, will take your holiday feasting to another level!

Oh, Gnome...

Cyndie is our designer-in-residence here at the bakery and she has quite the collection of gnomes dressed up for most any occasion. Gnomes hang out in the most unusual locations, like this one sitting on top of the pre-filter for the Steampunk Steam Pump water filtration system. Next time you visit, see if you can find them all...

Balsamic Vinegars Back in Stock!

I'm happy to announce that our balsamic vinegars, which have been selling briskly (leaving our shelf nearly bare), are now fully restocked. One of these is the Organic Turmeric Balsamic Vinegar by Ritrovo Selections in Modena, Italy. We can give you sample tastes of any of our balsamics, olive oils, jams, honeys or tapenades when you come to the bakery. Just ask!

Chocolate Chill is Back!

Now that the days are warming up, we've already had customers requesting a Chocolate Chill, our dairy-free, sugar-free "chocolate milk" that's made to order. If you haven't tasted one yet, come on by and give it a try. Just like that first taste of our bread, one sip of Chocolate Chill and you'll be doing the happy dance, too!
