As shifts in the job culture and available technologies change the reality of work, more and more Canadians are dipping into the world of self-employment, consulting and freelancing in the arts and culture sectors. This is an amazing time for the entrepreneurial spirit. Starting a new endeavor can be as thrilling as it is challenging, but it’s equally important to have an understanding of the nuts and bolts of being in business. Taxes are a huge part of that. This free Tax Workshop presented by Sunny Widerman of Personal Tax Advisors is an entertaining and information-packed presentation about the financial and tax aspects of running your own business.Sunny’s specialty is a friendly, approachable introduction to what you need to know to get you started. In this workshop you’ll learn about the GST-HST, deductible expenses, setting aside money for tax, and why doing what you love is great business. Take the opportunity to ask all your lingering tax questions during the Q&A from an expert who has been working in taxes since 2002. No judgement, just great advice and information with a sense of humour on the side.Send questions for Sunny in advance to info@forestcitygallery.com, or ask them during the workshop's Q&A period.

Pink Moon: Author Interview & Poetry Open Mic with Roshan James Facilitated by Aashay DalviFeaturing music by Amanda MovioBook Table hosted by Brown & DicksonThursday, February 24th from 6-8 PMPink Moon is part anthem of decolonization, part oracle of the times. Earthy, magical, and steeped in ancestral connection, Roshan James fuses her lived experience as a Tibetan-Indian born in Scarborough, Ontario, with a tangible connection to nature, humanity, and realms of consciousness. Growing up in the South Asian diaspora, but feeling disconnected from her cultural roots, James makes peace with the tension between her self-identities through poetry. With lyrical ease and simplicity, James resonates off the page, holding the reader in a space, almost trance-like, of quiet confidence. Infused with street-style and deep contemplation, ancient tones and child-like questioning, this collection is a journey through abstract expression. Pink Moon sits at an intersection of timely themes: anti-oppression, melanated lived experience, climate action, social justice, and personal spirituality. The collection will be of interest for discussion in academia, literary circles, and among people who are passionate about art, mindfulness, meditation, holistic health, and nature. For this special event, Roshan James will be in conversation with publisher Aashay Dalvi of Rad Riot Books to discuss her recent collection, Pink Moon. The conversation will be followed by a poetry open mic event, open to audience members. Bring your work and share it with us! London-based musician Amanda Movio will perform sets throughout the evening.Find out more info!
