PROJECT HIGHLIGHT | CUSTOM SMR MOUNT FOR GYRO STATION

We were pleased to be part of this project, featuring a custom SMR mount for the Sokkia Gyro station, designed by Peter Firmstone at Zeus Project Services.

Developed to support a more accurate and repeatable workflow, the mount makes it easier to integrate the instrument into a broader measurement setup. The design also features a low-profile fit and full centring adjustment, delivering both practical functionality and ease of use.

A SMARTER WAY TO INSPECT LARGE MARINE GENERATORS

Marine Generators Efficient 3D Inspection

WHY THIS INSPECTION MATTERS

Large marine generators are mission-critical assets on board a vessel, powering a wide range of essential systems. Accurate inspection is therefore vital, as poor rotor-to-stator fit can lead to assembly difficulties, maintenance challenges, and long-term performance issues.

THE CHALLENGE

The inspection involved measuring the diameter, cylindricity, and coaxiality of a large marine generator’s rotor and stator components to ensure accurate fit-up and prevent mechanical interference. The job was complicated by the rotor’s strong magnetic force, difficult surface conditions, and geometric variation in the stator slot wedges. Traditional inspection methods, which relied on multiple tools, also added unnecessary complexity and increased the risk of error.

WHERE THE RADIAN PLUS FITS

The API Radian Plus laser tracker offered a more efficient solution for this inspection task, combining long-range measurement with high accuracy. In this project, it delivered micron-level accuracy, measurement capability beyond 160 metres in diameter, and a fully wireless workflow with more than eight hours of effective operating time. These features made it well-suited to the inspection and assembly of large marine generators.

HOW THE MEASUREMENT WAS PERFORMED

Using an SMR target sphere, the team captured each inspection point while the laser tracker followed the target in real time. The system recorded 3D coordinates at up to 1000 Hz and sent the data directly to software for CAD comparison and GD&T analysis.

WHY IT WORKED BETTER

The benefit was not just greater accuracy, but a simpler and more reliable workflow. Using one measurement platform, the team could capture data, assess geometry, and identify required corrections more efficiently.

This was especially important for large marine generators, where small geometric errors can lead to larger assembly and performance issues over time.

KREON ONYX PORTABLE MEASURING ARM APPROVED FOR USE WITHIN JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Kreon Technologies has announced that its Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner has been approved for use within Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Following evaluation under JLR’s internal metrology standard JLR-STN-154450, the system was confirmed as capable of meeting demanding automotive stamping and Body-in-White (BIW) measurement tolerances, marking an important milestone for Kreon’s automotive metrology capability.
