California enters final phase of construction on world’s largest wildlife crossing
California has entered the final phase of construction on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, a landmark project that will become the world’s largest urban wildlife crossing upon its completion in fall 2026. Spanning U.S. Highway 101 in Agoura Hills, the crossing is designed to reconnect fragmented habitats, protect native species, and improve driver safety. This final stage includes extending the structure over a local road, restoring natural water flow, safeguarding heritage oak trees, and coordinating utility relocations. The project, a major public-private partnership launched on Earth Day 2022, supports the state’s biodiversity and climate goals, including the 30×30 initiative. Once complete, the crossing will feature native plants, habitat rocks, and sound walls, creating a living landscape that helps wildlife and people coexist more safely and sustainably.

California reaches major restoration milestone at the Salton Sea
Governor Newsom has announced a major milestone in restoring the Salton Sea with the successful filling of the East Pond Expansion—part of California’s larger Species Conservation Habitat Project. This effort is central to the state’s 10-year plan to rehabilitate ecosystems, support wildlife, and improve air quality by mitigating dust emissions from the shrinking lakebed. Historically reduced water inflows have led to increasing salinity and loss of habitat, threatening migratory birds and human health in surrounding communities. Backed by $245 million in federal support, the project has grown from an initial 4,100 acres to over 9,000 acres. Once complete, it will feature ponds, berms, and islands designed to sustain fish and bird populations while reducing airborne dust. With 2,000 acres now nearly operational, the initiative highlights a shift in perception—from viewing the Salton Sea as a liability to recognizing it as a vital environmental and community asset.

Wildfire Resilience Program at Santa Rosa Junior College's Shone Farm campus accepting applications for Fall 2025 cohort of student interns.
Student interns in the SRJC Wildfire Resilience Program will gain hands-on training in ecosystem stewardship and pre-and-post-fire vegetation management at Shone Farm. Intern crews will steward the 120-acre Shone Farm forest through vegetation management, fuel reduction, invasive species management, native plant restoration, and prescribed burning.
