As we begin this month of Thanksgiving, I have gratitude on my heart and mind. Our staff have been writing articles for our First Look and In Harmony newsletters, as well as preparing reports for a quarterly Historic New Harmony Advisory Board meeting. In the past, Historic New Harmony has started to slow down come November, but that’s not the case this year! It’s thrilling to see all levels of our organization so engaged and activated, creating new types of engagement opportunities and reimagining our long-treasured traditions. Thank you to all of those involved with Historic New Harmony and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, as well as our other partner organizations for all that you do to bring New Harmony alive! Thank you, too, to all of our visitors, who journey from across the block or even across the world to come visit Utopia!

FALL 2024 IN HARMONY NEWSLETTER
|
Over the summer, Historic New Harmony's staff took time to examine the In Harmony newsletter, which has been in publication since 1987 (37 years!). We took a cue from a tagline in the mid-2000s newsletters that declared New Harmony as a place "where the past and the future are present." For several years, we had been trying to accomplish that with In Harmony: sharing the results of our past work and what we are doing in the present, while also informing our subscribers of future events and programs. It was too much information to cover in one newsletter. The publication frequency of In Harmony had also transitioned in 2023 from monthly to seasonally. Though that timeline worked well for talking about the past, it hindered our efforts to keep subscribers informed about our present and future work in New Harmony. Our answer to this problem was to create a new monthly newsletter, First Look, and to reimagine In Harmony while keeping it a seasonal publication.
In August 2024, we introduced the First Look newsletter as way to offer our subscribers a "first look" at the next month's lineup of offerings from Historic New Harmony and the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. What's new in this November issue is a list of our upcoming tours, exhibits, programs and events through the rest of 2024 (located at the end of the newsletter). We want to provide information to help you plan your next visit to New Harmony and to continue engaging with us.
Starting with the Fall 2024 issue of the In Harmony newsletter, you can read about our stories of impact and community engagement from late Spring and Summer 2024 (spanning May-September). We cover the Firefly Festival (June), Independence Day in New Harmony (July), engagements with USI faculty, staff and students (August and September), and the Spirit of New Harmony survey exhibition (August-September).We also talk about Historic New Harmony's Advisory Board and share details from our efforts this year to engage visitors and locals, both in-person and online.
The next In Harmony newsletter is scheduled to be emailed to our subscribers during the first week of November 2024.
We welcome your comments on our newsletters and other publications. Please reach out to Heidi Taylor-Caudill at 812-682-6133 or hltaylorca@usi.edu and share your thoughts.

THE HARMONIST CONNECTION: NOVEMBER 13, 2024 - 6 PM CT/7 PM ET
|
Join us at 6 p.m. Central Time/7 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, for the next Harmonist Connection virtual talk featuring Christian Goodwillie. The Harmonist Connection is a FREE virtual program that brings the three sites of the Harmony Society - Historic New Harmony, Old Economy Village, and Historic Harmony - together to discuss what connects us. The United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or Shakers, and the Harmony Society each originated in Europe. Following their respective immigrations to North America, each became one of the most widely known and successful communal societies in the nineteenth-century United States. This illustrated talk will examine the many interactions between the two groups over the course of nearly 100 years, as well as their theological commonalities.
Christian Goodwillie is the Director and Curator of Special Collections and Archives at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. Prior to that he was Curator of Collections at Hancock Shaker Village and also served as President of the Communal Studies Association. Goodwillie has published twelve books and numerous articles on the Shakers, Freemasonry, and other topics.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR COMMUNITY? WHY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MATTERS NOVEMBER 21, 2024 - 6 PM
|
Last month, the New Harmony community spent a week reflecting on the future of the town. As a way to continue those important conversations, Historic New Harmony invited Dr. Matthew J. Hanka, Professor of Political Science at the University of Southern Indiana, to come to New Harmony to discuss his book, What is Happening in Your Community? Why Community Development Matters. Join us for Dr. Hanka's talk on Thursday, November 21 at 6 p.m. in the Atheneum's Clowes Theater. There will be a Q&A and book signing afterward. This event is FREE and open to the public.
"Communities are not static or stationary organisms. They are fluid and dynamic and change over time. The role of community development in the change and transformation of a community is critical to improving and enhancing the quality of life of the community and its residents. This book examines how community development changes a community and why that change matters, while also examining the relationship between community development and social capital. When a community improves its social capital, change can happen because people can leverage their networks to produce better results for themselves. This book also looks at comprehensive community development and collective impact models and several case studies that utilize these models. It also looks at how the transformation and revitalization of a neighborhood through new housing creates opportunities for people everywhere, and how effective placemaking strategies empower diverse groups of people in a community to reimagine their public spaces and the built environment to be more livable, walkable, creative, and sustainable while fostering greater connections with people in their community." - Book Description

Next time you're in New Harmony, consider catching one of our daily tours! In the morning, we offer 45-minute tours onboard our tram that give you an overview of the town without having to step out of the vehicle. "Tour like a local" while an interpreter points out interesting places to visit, eat, and shop while also sharing stories about our local history. In the afternoon, we take a more in-depth look at New Harmony with our 2-hour history tour. Join one of our interpreters in exploring several historic sites and learning more about the Harmonists, the Owen/Maclure community, and what came afterwards in New Harmony's history. This tour travels between sites via our tram and can be an easier option than walking tours for many visitors. All Historic New Harmony tours start at the Atheneum Visitors Center. The 1 p.m. History Tour includes a 12-minute orientation film and Atheneum exhibits. We can also customize our tours for a group's interest and schedule. Guided walking tours are available as well as "step-on" tours for groups on tour buses.
