Happy Fall!

October is the month when we feel like we're peeking around the corner to busy season but it's not quite here. And yet, there is lots going on! The first week of October is Banned Books Week. We also have The Great Pumpkin Hunt community scavenger hunt all month long, and a fun Wrap Party towards the end. For those who've lost their minds over the fantasy sensation Fourth Wing ("You want a dragon? Earn one." ― Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing), we've got a very special Fourth Wing book club planned!

Let's see...what else? Oh yes! The store is getting stocked with TONS of new books and LOADS of new gift items for kids and adults. (Can we mention that it's not too early to get a jump on your holiday gift-gathering?) Fingers crossed that the temperatures should start to cool off at least a couple of degrees. And of course, it's officially SPOOKY SEASON and time for pumpkin spice! Yay to that!

Banned Books Week is October 1 - 7

40% of Books Banned from US Schools Occurred in Florida

We've all seen the stories in the news about books being banned or challenged in schools. Maybe we've gotten a little numb to it, but we can't afford to be numb. PEN America recently reported about our state being the nation's leader in book banning. And in last week's local news, the Charlotte County Public Schools Superintendent directed the removal of all books containing LGBTQ+ themes, mentions, or characters from school and K-8 classroom libraries, in response to the new education law in Florida (see bill that passed here). This is all very concerning.

October 1-7 is Banned Books Week, a nationwide event that "highlights the value of free and open access to information" (bannedbooksweek.org). At Copperfish, we believe in the value of books and the freedom to read. And so we've made permanent displays of adult and children's books that have been banned or challenged in the U.S. and particularly in Florida. We've had many interesting discussions since creating the displays, and we're glad to have more. Please come in and explore what's on display; you might be surprised to see the titles there!

Hunt for Pumpkins in Downtown Punta Gorda!

Beginning October 3, pumpkins of all shapes and sizes will be hiding in more than twenty local businesses throughout our downtown community. Can you find them?

The Great Pumpkin Hunt is a free, family-friendly fall activity and a wonderful way to support local businesses in downtown Punta Gorda. To play, pick up a “Great Pumpkin Hunt!” stamp card at a participating location (see the list here). When you spot a pumpkin, get your card stamped or signed by the business. Collect stamps or signatures at 15 or more businesses to be entered into a prize drawing. The drawing will take place on Saturday, October 28 at the Great Pumpkin Hunt Wrap Party, which will be held at Centennial Bank in Punta Gorda from 10-11 am. Prizes, giveaways, refreshments, and lots of fun for all! Costumes are encouraged!
