Chronic pain is not just physical, it is also a mental and emotional experience.. |
National Pain Week is Australia’s annual awareness event for chronic pain, which takes place in the last week of July each year.
We reached out to our very own Janic, who is an Occupational Therapist, who completed an honours thesis on chronic pain, as well as having lived experience.

"Persistent or chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than three months or past normal tissue healing time, and it usually involves the pain system becoming overprotective. While acute pain protects us and promotes healing, persistent pain can prevent recovery and lead to a change in the body’s pain cycle with disruption to engagement in daily activities, sleep and mental wellbeing.
Many factors influence pain, and there are many ways to reduce pain and promote recovery. Occupational therapist's can help those with chronic pain to manage or reduce their pain, and live well despite it. Chronic pain is complex, and requires a biopsychosocial approach, where all aspects of the person and their pain is considered. This may include changes to lifestyle and environment, supporting gentle and safe movement, and addressing the psychological and cognitive impacts of pain. In my own personal journey with chronic pain, the most important aspect to healing has been acceptance of pain and self-efficacy around recovery. Those who experience chronic pain, can often continue on a long quest to find a cure, which is often not possible, and this quest can prevent recovery. Knowledge is power, and education is the key to healing!
Chronic pain is invisible, so people can often feel misunderstood and stigmatised by friends, family and even medical professionals. Supporting our clients with the right education and tools to take control of their own pain journey is an important step in helping them to reach their goals and do the things they love to do."
Thank you Janic for sharing your knowledge on chronic pain and we hope this advice has inspired you to understand and seek out support.

- Insight Timer - Free
- TENS Machine - stimulate the nerves and relieves pain
- Shmoody - Improve your mood
- Rise - Improve your sleep and daily energy
Today, there are many new therapies available to support management of chronic pain! @Insight Timer is a FREE meditation app for sleep, anxiety and stress. It features music for clam, insightful talks, bedtime stories for kids and parents, guided meditation and courses!
Chronic pain is complex and each person experiences it differently. Understanding the underlying reasons for chronic pain is crucial in developing effective management strategies. The most significant advancement recently is the digitisation of treatment options. The development we have seen in the chronic pain space is the increasing utilisation of Virtual Reality (VR) as a go-to treatment for chronic pain reduction. Unlike its conventional applications, VR therapy isn't intended to excite patients, but to calm individuals as a promising therapeutic approach. As digital platforms become more accessible, the integration of VR therapy and other innovative interventions is poised to revolutionise chronic pain management, empowering patients with personalised and effective solutions for their well-being.
